Product To Return : Maclan Racing – DRK 160 ESC
Problem With Product : I have 3 drk160 escs to send in, im pretty sure they are burnt up, when I turn them on they have steering and throttle and act normal, but tires spin very slowly, PLEASE if there is anything you guys can see that we may be doing wrong I would love to be informed. My recipes I had to have reprinted from our local hobby shop because we of course lost them. But the original purchase was no more then 60 days ago. I’m expecting to pay for repairs because I’m sure we must be doing something wrong to go thru 3 brand new speed controls. We would like to also pay to get them back ASAP

User Note

7/13/2021 Inspection

  • There are 3 DRK ESCs in this case.

Unit #1

  • This unit was an used, and previously was serviced under RMA#1775.    https://hadrma.com/rma/rma-1775/

  • The control board in this unit was damaged. It needs to replace with a new control board.

Unit #2

  • This unit has the cooling fan installed incorrectly (upside down).

  • This unit has damaged MOSFET board. The possible cause can be excessive burnout (current draw). The incorrect fan installation also can be a cause when the fan blades were stuck.

Unit #3

  • This unit has all wires and capacitor module removed.

  • The ESC has control board circuit all shorted. The possible cause can be the excessive burnout (current draw)

It is very rare to see many DRK ESCs failed at the same time. We’d like to ask some questions so we can help you to avoid similar problems as the cost of repair can be very expensive if the true cause was not identified.

  1. What motor did those ESC pair with?
  2. What is the motor timing on the motor?
  3. What is the gearing info?
  4. How long is the tire burnout?

Please reply top the report email. Thank you

7/14/2021 Customer reply

All 3 were paired with maclan motors 3.5

I believe the timing on the motor was at 20 degrees,
But one of the cars has a reverse motor, and we are kind of unsure on how the timing works with that, so any suggestions would be great.
Gearing changes a lot but we range from spur 85-93 pinion 14-23

I feel like the burnouts could of been shortened up, maybe half throttle for 5-8 seconds, I guess hard to tell exactly but that’s my guess.

7/14/2021 Communication from the service department

  • There are 2 things that must be addressed. One is the gearing. The gearing range is too wide. It should be conservative and within the safety range. The second issue is the motor timing setup when the motor/ESC needs to set at reverse rotation. We will provide you the information in a separate email. If the gearing and timing are not setup properly, the problem will happen again.
  • The cost of unit #1 is $50. The cost of unit #2 and #3 is $120 + $120= $240. The return shipping is $8.
  • Since the #2 and #3 are fairly new, we would like to offer this one-time courtesy discount 20% off on the total cost, and waive the return shipping. The total cost will be $232. We will email you a PayPal payment request. If you agree to proceed with the service, please review PayPal and process the payment. Thank you.
