Product To Return : MCL2009 DRK160 ESC
Problem With Product : Hey guys! im Having some issues with the DRK. I picked up the DRK last year sometine. Right about the time it was released. I just made the first hits on it a week or so ago. It made a couple decent passes with only a couple coggs. And then started Cogging down the the whole track really badly. Voltage never dropped below 7.0v and heat wasn’t an issue. Some fellow racers of mine helped me with checking the data log as I am very new to all of this data stuff and said numbers looked pretty good. Changed the sensor wire and geared it down just to make sure that wasn’t the issue. but started smelling that wonderful electronics smell. Pretty sure my cap pack is bad cause thats where the smell was coming from. Buddy of mine has a DRK. He let me try his Maclan Cap pack. Still the same issue. And no I didn’t go full throttle in a burnout. in fact I wasn’t doing much of a burn out because i have tire warmers. I just wanted to mention that because i know many have popped cap packs from doing high rpm burnouts. The capacitor is a little discolored as tho it looks like it was getting hot. So i didn’t get much info because i didn’t want to burn up the esc. I know this probably wont be covered under warranty. Especially since i tried changing the cap. But had to at least try. Just frustrating that a $230 esc doesn’t work from day one.. not sure the exact date of purchase. Again it was bought directly from Maclan Racing. And no i do not have rhe receipt.

User Note

8/11/2021 Check In

8/11/2021 Inspection – ESC is out of warranty by date. DRK ESC’s have a 30 day warranty from date of purchase. MOSFET board shows damage. See picture. Possible causes are:

  • Improper power input (reverse polarity)
  • Excessive amp draw (extreme burnout, incorrect gearing, too many runs in a row)
  • Motor out of sync (bridged terminals, sensor gap)

The fact that you have 2 ESC’s with the same failure is an indication that there is something wrong outside of the ESC.  Cogging like you described is typically a motor issue that can damage an ESC. This could be as simple as a motor that isn’t shimmed correctly, etc.  Also, please include the car you are running, motor, can timing and gearing and we can offer suggestions to help prevent this from happening again.

Normally the cost to repair the ESC will be $120 plus, plus $8 shipping, for a total of $128, but we will extend a one time courtesy discount on both of 30%. Please reply directly to this email if you wish to move forward with repairs and we will send you an invoice.
